Second Marriage and Children: How to Build a Bridge Between Past and Future

Building a family for the second time is not only a union of two people, but often the joining of two histories in which children play a central role.

What matters most here?

Children may carry hidden tension. Adult children sometimes unconsciously sabotage a parent’s shidduch because of emotional pain or misplaced loyalty to the parent who is gone.

A new family does not erase the old memory. The Rebbe taught that building a new home is not a betrayal of the spouse who passed away, but a great mitzvah that can even bring joy to the soul in the World of Truth.

Children’s compatibility matters too. In a blended family, it is important to consider whether children from different marriages can adapt to one another.

Waiting too long is not always wise. The Rebbe advised not to delay seeking a new spouse, especially when children are still young and can adapt more easily.

Special delicacy is required. Shadchanim working with previously married people must remember that their sensitivity to painful suggestions is often greater than that of younger singles.
